Chemical & Laboratory Safety > Fume Hood Certification

Fume Hood Certification

We are currently certifying all fume hoods on campus.

The Chemical Hygiene Plan states that all chemical fume hoods will be tested annually to insure that they have adequate flow for chemical containment. The criteria for acceptable fume hood performance at IUPUI has been set at a minimum average face velocity of 80 feet per minute (100 feet per minute is preferred) with the sash set a height of 12-18 inches.

All fume hoods that pass our minimum face velocity requirement of 80 fpm will be tagged with a yellow sticker showing the maximum height for your fume hood sash and the average face velocity. If a fume hood fails to meet the 80 fpm requirement, it will be tagged with a “Do Not Use” sign. If you find your hood tagged with one of these signs, please do not use the fume hood until the fume hood has been fixed by facilities and the sign has been removed by a member of EHS staff.
